MIS stands for Management Information System. 

In laymen language, MIS is used to provide the information which helps management to measure performance.  For example Mike runs a retail store. There various products in his store which are being sold on daily basis. What is the motive of Mike behind running a retail store - “to earn money”? How can he be sure that he is earning money/profit and he is meeting his motive of running retail store? Here he has an option of MIS that will help him to track daily, weekly, monthly & yearly sales. Now he will be the happier man because he has a complete track of his store.

MIS is nothing but a method of keeping/presenting important information to the user which helps to track/measure the performance of people, organization etc.

MIS can be done using various tools of software packages. It depends on the requirement and the volume of the data. One of the most used software package for MIS is EXCEL.
